Served aboard the Cabildo from 1961 to 1963, as a deck officer and then as navigator. My employment has gone from university instructor to admiralty attorney and, finally, to shipping economist with the United Nations in Santiago, Chile.

I served aboard Cabildo from Oct. 1968 to Apr. 1970 (and part of the last decommissioning crew), as an Ensign and LTJG. I was Second Division Officer and remember doing, is seems like, about 12-14 collateral duties as well. I joined Cabildo in Cam Rhan Bay, Vietnam and we decommissioned her in Long Beach California. I retired from the Navy (as a Captain) in September 1995, after a long and varied career.

The USS Cabildo was my first ship. I served on her from July 1957-May 1958. I reenlisted for the first time aboard her in Hong Kong, BCC. I was the junior Hospital Corpsman, HM3, at the time. My most vivid memory is when we were deployed to WESTPAC in Jan 1958 and about 24 hours west of Hawaii ran into a monstrous typhoon. One of the crewman from another ship in the convoy had an acute appendicitis and was transferred to the Cabildo. We operated on him that night and removed his ruptured appendix. All this with 40 foot waves from the typhoon. (Nice Work on this website)

Im setting here at home thinking of the war aginst terrorism and I remember the days when demonstrators were all over the country trying to stop the war, they were called pasafists, and there friends who ran to canada were called cowards. They were all forgivin years later by the pres. We were in VietNam at that time. I considered us as the real Americans trying to stopo the evil ons. Today those same cowards now see how we were the good guys and commies were the bad guys. there are new pasafists in america, they cry out to stop war but we should also stop evil anyway we can. I feel they have a problem with seperating their ideals with their soft lives. They want everything to be perfict but are afraid to fight for it. During the VietNam warthey were called cowards, and ran to Canada, today we cant call them cowards, and Canada wont tade them. where can we send them? , and, where can they hide there shame? Its too bad old soldiers and sailors cant tode up arms again and show them we still love America enough to die for her.. GOD BLESS AMERICA

served aboard USS Cabido 1962 to 1964, RDSN-RD2. Then I stationed at Pt MUGU, 64-66, USS ENHANCE (MSO) 66-68, RD'B school, RD1, 1968. Also, this was the year about nine of us were changed to EW's. Then was stationed aboard aboard USS EDSON 69-70, USS LONG BEACH 71, then ended in hospital for six months. I was then sent to the USS JFK 10/71-10/72, then to the recruiting command in Richmond,VA, EWC, 72-75. Then to the USS Joseph Daniels 75-76 and the USS Lawrence 76, CWO-2. USN naval hopital was my last command as I had to retire due to disability. My best commands were the Cabildo and JFK. My hardest command was the Enhance as we had patrol off of Da Nang most of 1967. There are many pleasent things to remember about the Cabildo, we worked hard as a team and had many enjoyful liberties together. I was also married, while aboard the Cabildo, 39 years. Hope to hear from others.

I believe it was February of 1957 when I went aboard the old girl, Uss Cabildo LSD-16. I left her decks for the last time in Late July of 1960. At the time I remember it being a happy time==after 3 1/2 years ==finally leaving all of that regulation stuff behind!! Hooray for cilvilian life!!!
Just a short time ago I was looking at some pictures that had been taken on her upper decks and I ain't ashamed to say tears came to my eyes. I was a boy when I first stepped in that vp liberty boat that ran me out into the Long Beach harbor to where the old Girl was bouyed==the ride seemed to last for ever. When I left her 3 1/2 years later I had become a man. Hard work, a great life and hours and hours of partying: If that is what it takes to make of a boy==Well, I think the Cabildo did one hell a good job with this guy

Hey.. the Cabildo may have been twice as old as the point defilance, but it always managed to do better with what it had. I never saw a "Red E" with two hashmarks on the P.D's stacks. (that means three consecutive years of engineering efficiency) and that wasn't the only "E" on Cabildo's stacks. Cabildo was also the communications center during Operation Dominic. any guesses as to why?

I very much remember that slow rust bucket. All kidding aside, you have a good
WEB site. I can remember as if it was yesterday calling on the radio "Cabildo Cabildo,
this is Point Defiance Point Defiance over" My service time was from 02-57 to 10-63.

Great web site. My father was on board in 1945 and was present at the commissioning ceremony, but then took ill and did not get to serve. He would greatly enjoy hearing from anyone that was on board when the ship was commissioned. James Word 449 Avery Word Rd. Minor Hill, TN 38473. Thanks for the memories!!
