Served aboard CABILDO 5/63 to 5/64 as Signalman 2nd.
Was involved in putting cruise book "Cabildo Crusade"
together. Remember the VPs that lost their bow ramps at
Molokai during the rip-tide; the school desks in the
well; all the 90 some ships at Okinawa when some idiot
dropped a lit battle lantern down by the anchor on one
of the radar picket destroyers and the UDT had to send a
boat load of frogmen out to find out what the light was
shining in the water. I also remember the collison when
the APA cut our accommodation ladder in half and put a hole
in our hull mid-ships (where the battery locker was located) I remember how a bunch of us wanted to take a boat
over and paint "Cabildo Notch" below the hole in the bow of
that APA when we joined up with her again! That Transport
sure looked weird with water pouring out of that hole every
time she pitched in heavy seas! The reason we had the
collision was an attempt to transfer an injured sailor who
was using a spanner wrench - the wrench slipped - his thumb
went through the wire mesh covering an exhaust fan and the
APA had a full-fledged doctor aboard while Cabildo only had
enlisted HMs.
Drop me a line via e-mail if you were aboard during that
cruise - would enjoy hearing from former shipmates - not
that I would remember any off you (after all its been 40
years!

I was searching the net for info on my dad, Linn McCubbin, and your site came up. I have not seen my dad in 24 years, since I was 10. My parents divorced around then. I heard from him only once about 16 years ago. I do not know if he is alive or not. It was nice to see someone remembers him. Everyone who knew him, except my mother, has only nice things to say about him. I don't know much about him, but I know he served on a ship in the 60's. If anyone comes in contact with him, tell him all is forgiven.
Thanks to Rich Elvine for mentioning him. It means a lot.

I came aboard the Cabildo as a Marine Corps LVT-P5 crew chief. I could tell as we were boarding the aft that this Gallent ship had seen some tough roads or seas as it were. I was saddened to hear that she had been used as a target and sunk on her own. I'll not forget the mast with the Purple Heart ribbon with the one gold star and I never knew what it was for and as of yet I have not see any other Navy vessel with the Purple Heart.

Dad died in 1992 after a courageous 20+ year battle with multiple sclerosis. He and mom were great parents to five kids. Your website is a gift to those of us who lost our fathers far too early in life to have heard their navy stories... your pictures and comments make me smile with memories of Dad's younger days. Thank you, Webmaster, for clearing out all the “trash” from the website!………Now, I have a question for my Cabildo shipmates from the Viet Nam era: I am looking for the whereabouts, if living, or any information pertaining to Armund (sp?) Tanis SMC who served on the Cabildo up to his departure during the summer of 1968 (not sure how long his tour lasted). He was a friend and shipmate of my Dad, A.F. Zupkas YNC, aboard the USS Harlan R. Dickson (DD708) during a Med cruise in the early 60’s, also participating in the Quarantine action of the Cuban Missile Crisis. There are plenty of sea-stories between these two old salts! My dad said that he had shown Chief Tanis a photo of me while I was a high school senior…the chief’s response: “Ah, the kid’s got too much hair!” Little did Chief Tanis know that several years later, for at least a very short time, this long-haired kid would be his Division Officer! To make a long story short, on June 8, 1968 I reported aboard the Cabildo, anchored in Subic Bay with fellow Ensign Bruce Wolven to relieve the Comm Officer, LTJG Shields. Much to my surprise, my dad’s old shipmate was standing the Quarterdeck watch. I regret that I didn’t have much of a chance to get to know or work with the chief…it was shortly after I took over as Comm that I signed Chief Tanis’ chit for emergency leave to return to CONUS because his wife was ill. Both my dad and I lost touch with him after that, and would appreciate greatly any information that anyone could pass along. Sorry, that this note is a little long…hope it is of some interest or amusement as one of life’s ironies.

I remember only one thing about LT.JG. Perry Bishop, who logged on earlier. On the 2nd or 3rd 'Nam cruise I made on the Cabildo, we ran some Marines up a narrow river to Na Be. Mr. Bishop strutted around with a sidearm strapped on and said to some of us deck and ops types "I can shoot you if you don't follow orders". On that same trip, the Vietnamese pilot came aboard while we were cautiously putting up river (it seemed as if there was only 100 feet clearance on either side of the curvey river), bound up the ladder to the conn, and declared the moment he got the conn "All ahead flank". Better steerage, yeah?
P.S., a correction to my first log-on: I came aboard as a Seaman apprentice, not an SM2.

I realize the web site is open for all, but it is degrading to read some of the recent comments which have very bad and inappropriate language. I have been proud to be a member of the USS Cabildo Association and of having been priviledged to serve aboard the USS Cabildo during the Korean Conflict but have been very disappointed in some of the comments which have recently been submitted. We shoud all remember that our children and grandchildren could read these and we certainly want them to be proud of us. Thank you for allowing me to suggest we be more conscious of what we send to the USS Cabildo web site and refrain from the trashy and inappropriate language.

Great site. My Dad, BM3 Royal Dunnege, was aboard in '51. He was aboard for Greenhouse, I think. Anybody remember him. I know it was a long time ago, but our time in the service always seems like yesterday!
Keep up the good work!

OB Nov or Dec 66-Mar 70. Came aboard as SM2, discharged upon decommissioning in Long Beach as QM2. Have heard from Mapes once. I hated it and loved it at same time. Best times: typhoons, surfing at Cam Rahn Bay, and nights atop the conn in port. Worst times: "sweepers", provisioning work parties, and GQ in aft-steering.

I served aboard her from '62 to early '65. I got transferred to the Valley Forge because the Cabildo was going on a WestPac cruise and I would be discharged before her return to the states. However, during my last 6 months of duty, The Valley made 3 trips to Okinawa taking marines and supplies to serve in Viet Nam. I was in M div. Hi to Haskell Terry, D.E.Johnson, James Bush, Crooks, Renner, Woody, Weldon. Would love to hear from one of you.

Interesting to see your site. Great work. Brings back memories.
I was an RM3 on the staff of COMPHIPRONSEVEN under Commodore Bishop in 1965 which was briefly stationed on Cabildo in 1965.
I was qualified from RM striker to RM3 by the radiomen of Cabildo. I was assigned to the crew in order to be promoted to RM3 and served as part of the radio crew enroute to Vietnam in addition to be the radioman and driver for Commodore Bishop.
Cabildo carried a contingent of Marines to Vietnam and we did amphibious training in San Diego before we departed for deployment to Vietnam.
A Lt from the Cabildo and I went ashore in Vietnam to pick up documents and codes in early 1966. We were in combat waters long enough to earn Vietnam service ribbons.
I later transferred with the flag to other ships. So I served on Cabildo in 1965, 1966 and 1967 on and off at various times as flag of Comphibron7 moved.
My address is 4016 Quartz Drive, Santa Rosa, CA 95045 707 539-9014 email is joe@generatorjoe.net
Sorry to see Cabildo no longer exists. It seemed like a battleship to me when I was young in the US Navy.
Regards, Joe Romano (RM2)

Would like to say hello to all my ole shipmates and ask for some help. I am looking for information on a photo that appeared in some magazine back in 62. The photo was taken while we were at Christmas Island. It shows the bow of the Cabildo in the foreground and a mushroom cloud in the background. Does anyone remember seeing picture. Looking forward to seeing everyone at the reunion.
Your shipmate, Jack

Hello, John White--
I have been computer-inactive for quite some time due to PC problems (hard drive, system failures, ISP connections, etc.) and a couple of surgeries. However, while my PC still acts up occasionally, I have returned to full duty. You still have the best ship site on the net. Please send me your e-mail address.

When ever I'm feeling sad and low, I turn to this great site and my heart feels great releive. To me, this is better then anything else that you can do to feel good about yourself. I wish that more shipmates would respond to the Now and Then section. It would be good to see the faces of the old days. Come on guys this is one of many great parts of belonging to this great association.
