Wow, web master, what a great tribute to a great ship. I served on her from 1964-66. Unfortunately, after making grade(QM2)I was transferred to the USS Point Definace in late 66 and thereupon ended my tour of active duty in Sep 67. Just curious--was the CABILDO's steering wheel(wood), brass bell, and or whistle(steam horn) saved before she was written off?

I want to let everyone know that my DAD, Harry A. Dick, Jr. passed away on 9/11/04 after battling lung cancer for two years. I know he enjoyed the reunion he went to in Branson a few years ago. He was a strong and proud advocate for our Armed Services. His family misses him terribly and the country has lost a true patriot.

On the last sign in by Early Anna Gardner, Ishe asked to be contacted by people who knew Gary Dean Gardner. I tried to e-mail her because I was on the Cabildo and did know Gary, but her e-mail is blocked and I was unable to deliever my message, too bad. people should not ask to be contacted if they have their e-mails blocked.

My brother, Gary Dean Gardner, was on the Cabildo during 1962, 1963, 1964 and possibly 1965. He was an electrician. I would like to correspond with crewmembers who remember him. I am sad to report that Gary died April 8, 1998, of colon, liver and brain cancer. He was born April 4th, 1944, (4/4/44..at the 4th hour he was proud to have said to me and many others during his wonderful life time. I spent from September 1997 shortly after his diagnosis, until the moment of his death at the age of 54 and 4 days. I loved my brother very much and miss him more than words can express. his sister born 1/6 1942 Early Anna Gardner

Had my appendix burst this last Thursday... as I was about to go under the knife, I explained to the surgeon that I had to be back on my feet for our Sept 9th navy Reunion in St Louis. He asked what I did and when and where, and I replied, "a Snipe, from 59-63, on an LSD"..... He replied, "I was a boiler tender" and he had me under sedation. I woke up three hours later to find no stiches or incisions.... he had gone the extra effort to remove my appendix, endoscopically. All I have is three little holes in the skin of my belly.. Praise The Lord, and Shipmates. I'll be there.

Served on board 10/60 to 9/61, as an EM2. One good but short year, spent the next 19 year on several ships a year in Viet Nam and a couple good tours of shoreduty in San Diego. retired in 12/79 and never looked back untill the computer came along. Retired from punching the old time clock 3 years ago and love it. I thank GOD every day for the security that those 25 years in the Navy give me today . It was rough, but fun at the same time. I would do it again if I were 40 years younger.

My father, Ed Bruns, was on Cabildo in early 50's. I went through his color slides recently and found many interesting photos! One series, labeled "Cabildo Operation at Tok Chok Tog" has scenes such as "LVT's Disembarking", "Panorama", "Loading LVT's", etc. -- there is a small, rocky island on the horizon. There is a colorful series of the Sasebo Harbor with "British Carrier", "LST," "US Carrier", and a large parade in Sasebo, Japan with many service bands and color guards represented. Slides of a bus tour to a silk factory in Kyoto, a large shrine, and the Emporer's residence shows many young sailors. Some group photos are captioned, such as "Matthews, Scates, Hollingsworth, Mullinax, Murphy, Pernosky, Smith, Chestnut." A number of slides show sailors on the ship at gun posts, in bunk area, watching a female singer perform on ship, etc. If you can provide a context for some of these scenes, I'd enjoy hearing from you. Dad died in 1992. He served from 1951 - 54 or 55, I think ... was on the Cabildo and the Colonial, but these slides definitely match the photos on the Cabildo web site.

I am the secretary of the Stony Brook Community Church of which Jack White was a member. Jack served as treasurer for a number of years and when I introduced him to our new Mac computer, he took it on and became very proficient in its use. Not long after he bought himself a computer which resulted in forming this website. I almost feel that I knand stories, Jack would tell me of the latest additions, amazing me with his new adeptness on the web. He loved the Navy and his time served on the Cabildo as well as his beloved wife, Lee, who died March 20, 2004. How unfortunate that neither of them lived to see their grandson, Matthew White, graduate from the Naval Academy this year. Jack and my dad had the opportunity to exchange Navy stories as my dad was a plankowner of the USS North Carolina. I am glad to see this website being maintained so well. Jack would have enjoyed it!

I served just a short time on the Cabildo, from about June to 1 August 1954. During that time the ship went to Portland (where I now live), Seattle, various ports in Alaska (Nome being one of them) and dropped off in Seattle on 1 August where I was discharged from the Navy. I was told about this web site by Joe Bruner who I served with during that time period. Enjoyed the information very much, congratulations on a great job. Kuhn A. Marshall ET2
