  Note/Comment: I just wanted to say hello to all those who served on the USS Cabildo (LSD-16) during her service with PHIBRON 7 in 1960-1961. During that time period I served on the USS Navarro (APA-215/later LPA-215) and remember seeing the Cabildo, Carter Hall, Belle Grove and Point Defiance on cruises and in harbor. Unlike Belle Grove and Carter Hall, Cabildo was blessed with steam turbines instead in reciprocating. I remember that it was not unusual for Belle Grove and/or Carter Hall to break down during a cruise and have to be towed or the squadron had to hove to while they were repaired.

  Note/Comment: The White house tour has been canceled. They (The White House) keep changing times and dates. The latest change called for Saturday morning at 0715, it would have required a different bus and additional cost. So the majority of association officers decided to cancel the tour. Dear sir, There will be a 40th year reunion honoring Operation Starlite. On August 18th, 1965 the Marines took on almost 2,000 North Vietnamese regulsrs on the Van Toung Peninsula. My unit the Third Bltn. Third Marines made a beach assault. The USS Cabildo was one of three ships that carried us to the point where we climbed into our Mike boats and began our assault. We lost 45 men and had over two hundred wounded in six days. I have a site for you with all the info on the reunion and hope you would post it on your site so any alumni you have that helped us on this operation has the opportunity to attend. The reunion will be at Paris Island S.C. and will include viewing a Marine recruit graduation. Let me take this time to thank you for your support. I made three beach assaults and several helalifts off of the Iwo Jima and the Princeton during my tour in Nam. Everytime we boarded ship you guys fed us good and encouraged us knowing some of us weren't going to return. My name is Jim Fontella....81 mortars....3/3/3.

I've been visiting this site since I found it in 2003. Was aboard 66-70 (yeah, served my whole enlistment aboard). Ron Curry just contacted me via this website; I've also heard from Barry Mapes. Did anyone else get to carry their surfboard on her? I was allowed to in 68 or 69- surfed Cam Rahn Bay (pretty small). While I was out, Captain Johnson signaled me in from the beach and asked if he could try it. He did OK, but then, there were no mortars going off next to us as in Apocalypse Now. I was aboard during de-comissioning. Regarding the person who asked about the wooden helm- I don't know, but lots of stuff walked off her during decomissioning in Long Beach.

I came on board the Cabildo at Cam Rahn Bay during the '68 West Pac tour as a QM striker. I help decom. her several years later as a QM2. I see several names in the guest books and pictures that I recognize and would love to hear from some old Shipmates. Goodwin, Mapes, Karnes, Morris, Stanley,----anybody. Great times.
