Note/Comment: I received the fllowing e-mail from Raymond Walley reguarding the passing of Franklin "Frank" Faulkner. He was not listed on our crewmembers list. If you knew him and know what years he was aboard and his highest rate onboard the Cabildo please let me know so I can update his record.

This email is to let you know that Franklin "Frank" Faulkner passed away Tuesday, September 25, 2007, here in Lake Jackson, Texas. I understand that Frank served on the USS Cabildo sometime during early 1950s -- and apparently was present during Operation Greenhouse, March 1951. As I did not see Frank in the list on the site, thought you might want to know. You can contact me at redwoodlj@sbcglobal.net. Thank you for your work via this site. With appreciation for you and Frank and all the men and women who have served our Country, Ray Walley, Lake Jackson, Texas

Note/Comment: My name is Mike Riley and I work for the Naval Sea Systems Command. We are the acquisition agency for procuring new ships and repairs of in service ships. I've recently had a question about whether ships of Cabildo's class had a degaussing system. We are trying to ascertain if any of that gear contained PCBs. If any of you members could help, I would be thankful.

  Note/Comment: Mr. Gammeter,

My Grandfather, SFC Charles S. Shelton served on the Cabildo at some point in his 1941-1961 career in the Navy as a Ship Fitter and a Recovery Diver. He passed away in 1998 and I never got to talk to him about his World War Two experiences or his service on the USS Cabildo or the many others he sailed upon. I was thirteen and living 1200 miles away from him. I loved him dearly and I know he didn't talk about the war or the Navy much ( a few dirty ones maybe!). Now that I am in the Navy as a Cryptologic Technician and soon to be Naval Air Crewman I find myself wondering more and more what it was like for him and the rest of the WW2 generation out there on the oceans. If you have any information concerning him or know of any of his crew willing to talk to me I would appreciate it.

Very Respectfully,
CTT2 Hannah S. Montgomery

Webmaster Note:
If any of you knew Charles when he was aboard please let me and Hannah know what information you have. I would like to get enough information to add his name to the crew member list. At a minimum I need one year that he was aboard.

Note/Comment: I have been diagnosed with asbestos exposure. This doesn't even show up until 20-50 years after you have been exposed. The only way they found it was when I had surgery on my shoulder. I came out of recovery not being able to breath. What had happened was that the nerve blocker gave me an allergic reation and this caused part of my left lung and part of my diaphragm to go. They didn't know this at the time but found out later after they did a CT scan. When I went into a pulmanary doctor she said not only about the lung and diaphragm but also about some asbestos scaring. Now what I need to know if any of the crew of the Cabildo has had any simular type of things. This doctor has gone through all of the jobs that I did and it all comes back to the Navy. I know that this may never go anywhere but if you have had any thing like this pop up then please write to me. I need all of the imput that I can find about this. I have done nothing but fight the veterans for all of this. It seems like something can be done about all the asbestos that we had to inhale during this time we spent in the Navy.
Thank you,
Doug Smith
