  Note/Comment: Dear Sir;

My name is Henry D. Pierce. I served aboard the Cabildo from Dec. 1964 thru Dec. 1967 as a Machinist Mate in "M" division. There are several ships that operated in the in-shore waters off the coast of Viet Nam, or tied up directly to a pier, that are now on the list of ships presumed to have been exposed to Agent Orange or other hazardous chemicals. To date, the Cabildo is not on that list. Do you have knowledge, or know of anyone, that could tell me if She was ever tied to a pier in the RSVN? I remember going on liberty in places like Qui Nhon, Vung Tau, and Cam Rhan Bay but I can't remember if we were tied up or took liberty launches to go ashore. Perhaps you know of someone that has copies of the Deck Logs for those cruises. By the way, I just recently reapplied for membership in the Association, maybe Trea. Grimm (Gwin) has it by now. I would appreciate hearing from you on this matter.
Thank You, Pierce

Henry,

Thanks for checking in with us. I can't shed any light on the issues you raise but will post your e-mail on the guest log as others may be able to.

He graduated from High School (York) in 1949 and from Purdue U. in 1953 -therefore he would have been on the ship in the 1953-1955 time frame. He passed away in 1991.

Dear Mr. Gwin,

I am writing to let you know that my father, Hershel H. Kaiser, passed away on April 12, 2010. Hershel often talked abot the Cabildo and the fine people he served with on that ship. I thought you and the USS Cabildo Association should know of the passing of another member of the "Greatest Generation".

Sincerely,
Randee Kaiser

Warren,
I was aboard the U.S.S. Cabildo from 1953 to 1957. You will find me in the Members list. When we went to Japan we had a collision with a DE. The name of the De was the Spangler DE 696. Well I though it would be kind of nice if the Spangler crew had the pictures I took of the occasion. Let me explain. We were doing high line transfer of guard mail. I was shooting the breeze with the QM on the bridge of the Spangeler with semaphore. All a sudden I knew the Spangler was going to hit us. I stop chatting with the QM on the Spangler, and grabbed my camera and took three quick pictures, which I am sending you. I had just put a new QMSN ( BonHam also in the crews members list) on the helm. I ran to the pilot house and shouted to Bohman, "are you on course, she's going to hit us". He said let the ..........hit us I'm on course. About then the ship shuttered as the Spangler hit us. I checked and Bonham was on course. By this time the Spangler had bounced off the Cabildo and was doing flank speed passing us. I left the pilot house and headed for the bridge. About then for some reason the Spangler did a hard right rudder and was crossing our bow.....CLOSE. Standing on the compass platform I could see her stern on the port side of our bow and her bow on the starboard side. Dead ahead I could only see her mast. I thought we were going to hit her amid ship. But she was sailing fast enough and we missed her. Now I have sent this information to the site manager of the Spangler. It happens he was a QM also .I sent him the pictures also. He is excited as heck about this. Being the age I am now I forget some things. He wanted to know if I could get any more information from anyone on the Cabildo.
Is there's a chance some one would remember any more about the collision. And maybe have pictures also?
Also, I have a ton of pictures of my time on the Cabildo. Hong Kong, Iwo Jima, Taiwan, Alaska, Japan Eniwetak. I hope this isn't to confusion. But if you know anyone that remembers this incident would you send me his name. I don't think I will make the Reunion, even thou I live in Iowa and about a five hour drive to Branston MO. Darn. Now the pictures.

Webmaster Note:
Joe, I hope posting your e-mail will find someone who remembers the incident. I am always looking for pictures to add to the websiite. We would love to have you join us in Branson.

  Note/Comment: Dear Webmaster
My father served in the US Navy from 1944 to 1946. On his separation papers it states he served on the USS Cabildo (LSD-16) and so I looked for it. My dad passed away this past week, but he was very proud to have served in the Navy, and I am very proud to say that he did. His name was Marvin E Howard, from Portales, NM.
If I am reading the paper right he was an AS, S2c. I just wish I had of looked up the ship before now so he could have looked at the site with me.
Thank you for maintaining the site and honoring the US Navy.
Debera (Howard) Coody

Webmaster note:
We are sorry for you loss and also wish that your father had found our association sooner. I have added his name to the crewmember log.
Thank you for contacting us and your kind words.
