  Note/Comment: I would like to notify the association of the death of Andrew Maglievaz RD 2. He served aboard the Cabildo from 1962 to 1964. He was taken to the lord by Lukemia, I'm sure this was from the radiation testing near Christmas Island. Everyone aboard the ship at that time needs to know they have rights to radiation exposure if they come down with cancer. We were unaware of this fact until lately.

He served proudly aboard the Cabildo, the best Ship he served aboard according to his accounts. He will be deeply missed by all.

  Note/Comment: My Father (Gene Berney Akin) While he was in the NAVY He was involved in the operation Greenhouse in Eniwetok while he was in the Navy he often told his story! He was on one of 3 small boats that had left the ship to and were set out to pre detonate the Bomb This Bomb was to be set off under water. The first small Boat had went out to were the bomb was placed and a diver had went down and programed the first of 3 functions to detonate the bomb. My Father was the pilot of the second small boat. The first small boat was headed back to the ship. The second small boat was over the detonation site while the diver went down to set his part for detonation. A third small boat was approaching the sit while the second boat was in route to the ship. the third boat arrived over the bomb and diver went and completed his portion of detonation this was the final program. All 3 of the small boats were to have returned to the ship prior to the bomb going off. The third small boat had stalled and had problems restarting the engine. The second boat that my father was pilot of was reacting to the 2 officers that were aboard his boat. They could not make up their minds weather to go back and save the second boat or continue on mean while the bomb went off the 3 small boat was totally lost killing all 3 crew members. The second small boat. with my father as the pilot was washed ashore on an Island. After taking note on the damage the boats wiring was melted and was unable to be used again. My father said the 3 crewmembers on his boat were stranded on this island for weeks and were finally found by a recover boat that was picking up the remains of nuclear fallout. When they returned to the states they were tested for radiation and found very high levels. Now my father is having thyroid problems. of course he is very healthy other than that. He lives In Henderson NV.is there been any mention of this incident? and if so could you plaese refer me?

THANK YOU

  Note/Comment: Hello Warren,
My father-in-law cross-decked over to the Cabildo for the Shellback ceremony in 1968. He is currently in hospice and cannot remember the date. I would really like to get the date for him so I can have a certificate made. I have been searching the internet for this, but have been unsuccessful. Can you please help me out with this? I'm sure he would enjoy seeing it before he passes.
Thanks,
Buddy (Darryl) Olesen

From Webmaster:
Hi Darryl,
I don’t have any record of the 1968 crossing/crossings. I asked one of our association members who was aboard then and will let you know what he says. What was your father-in-law’s name?

Regards, Warren

Thanks Warren.
His name is Ed Valenzuela and he was a FTG. He cross-decked over from the Hubble. I'm not too sure of the date. He's not really able to recall exact times/dates. He told me it was when the Cabildo was on her way home from Vietnam. I saw on the 1962 crossings on the site. I'm guessing to 1968, because that's when Cabildo was on deployment. It's all a guessing game for me right now, just trying to piece stuff together for him. It'll be nice to be able to share this stuff with my kids about their grandpa. I think they're tired about hearing all my sea stories. haha Thanks again for the help on this.

Webmaster Note: If anyone knows what dates the Cabildo crossed the equator in 1967 - 1969 please let both Darryl and I know.

Warren,
Just thought you'd like to know that Dusty Lynn, the daughter of John Shroyer (68-69), lost everything in the tornado that struck Joplin, Missouri. She used to work at the hospital that got hammered by the tornado. She intends on remaining in Joplin and working for the doctor that she worked for prior to the tornado. If anyone wishes to help ... contact John via his email address.
Thanks.

  Note/Comment: Mr. Gammeter;

Please be advised that the Cabildo has now been entered on the list of ships presumed to have been exposed to AGENT ORANGE or other toxins due to service in Viet Nam. This will make it easier for anyone of our shipmates or their spouses, that were onboard during the cruises in '65 thru "68 to apply for compensation if they suffer from any of the illnesses or conditions listed by the VA as being "Presumed to have been caused by that exposure".

For a list of the diseases on that list, please go to www.VA.gov or www.BlueWaterNavy.org.

Thank you, Pierce

  Note/Comment: Hello,
My family and I would appreciate you adding our father, ANTHONY MICHAEL PECO, MM1, WILMINGTON, DE (deceased, 2/14/2001), to the crew member list on your site. I am not sure of the dates he was aboard, but I do know that when the United States engaged in WWII, he went from deep sea diving training in Connecticut directly to the USS Cabildo. I believe that was 1945. I will be researching his navy records in the near future to confirm the dates, but in the meantime, will you please do my Dad the honor of listing his name? He was a very proud American and was very proud to have served his country along with the many men who fought and continue to fight for our freedom. Any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact me at my email address.
Thank you very much!

Elsie, thanks for sending in your fathers name and details. We are pleased to add him to our crewmember list.

  Note/Comment: Hi Warren
This is probably the only thing that the crew members need to know. It is Senator Akaka press release (Sept 2011) announcing the reclassification of certain BLUE water ships, to Brown water ships while on their Vietnam Tour. One link on this press release shows the ships that are approved and have been recertified. The Belle Grove is on this list. I believe there are other squadron ships either on this link or the next link in the Press Release which list ships that are in the process of recertification. More ships will be added as they are discovered. The third link names all of the diseases that have been discovered because of AO exposure. Although not on the list, all secondary dieses are covered as well. For example, neuropathy from Diabetes as well as blindness, cataracts and so on. You get the idea. New diseases are being added all the time.
Here is the Senators website;
http://akaka.senate.gov/press-releases.cfm?method=releases.view&id=7502439e-1d69-4782-b186-a4c86470302c

A copy of this website is all that is needed IF the Cabildo winds up on the list. Even if it does not wind up on the list, all the VA will require is period specific information from the ships log (easy to obtain from Navy, I bought a set for the BG) showing times and dates the ship was in a river or harbor (harbor=three sides); This is a pretty big deal to guys and families affected by AO exposure. Believe me. One of the key words in the press release is PRESUMTIVE. That is the same as boots on the ground in this particular case even if the sailor never went ashore. Agent Orange, Blue and White are all aerosol. 22,000,000 gallons of Agent Orange alone was sprayed from Laos/Cambodia boarder to DaNang up to the DMZ on a regular basis. Remember that anyone with any kind of a health problem needs to go to the VA to enter their claim for reasons I described previously. Do not assume that your health issue isn't the result of exposure. Your probably wrong, I was. The VA will not move off their collective ass to do anything unless the Vet and/ or their VA Dr. informs the VA via their health file and a lot of follow-up. I have been in the VA system for 10 years 3 of them fighting for AO exposure. Now that the BG is listed, it got a lot easier to move through the system.. Believe me Warren, this is a really big thing the Cabildo Association could do for their period specific sailors and families. I promise the word will spread outside of the assoc. to other sailors in squadron 7 as well as to crews on ships outside the squadron. Don't know if you knew any other officers on other ships either in or out of the squadron, but most of us did including me. This information could literally mean everything to the person(s) in health trouble from AO exposure. Their medical bills may have already cost them, a marriage, a house, financial ruin, crippled children and so on
’The noun COMRADERY has 1 sense: 1. The quality of affording easy familiarity and sociability Would not trying to notify as many Cabildo shipmates as possible be one of the ultimate reasons we endear comradely? I have been working with the BG association by keeping them informed. I cannot take on the Cabildo as well. You and your association will need to make a decision to move forward on this or do nothing. By the way, several web sites under LSD-16 state that the ship was in DaNang. This is another piece of evidence and should be researched. Perhaps one of your members, maybe one that has health issues related to AO exposure as outlined in Akaka link, would like to take over the responsibility if for no other reason than to help himself.
Sincerely
Tom Mueller

  Note/Comment: Warren,

I was on the Cabildo 62-64 then went to the Belle Grove. IF you don't know about this info, please forward to ALL shipmates on board for the 65 and 66 cruise. Without getting into 3 terrible years of my battling the VA concerning AO exposure, Senator Akaka of Hawaii, has taken up the fight for all the blue water ships that where physically in a harbor (DaNang for one) Harbor must have 3 sides or any river, to be reclassified as a BROWN water ship. EVEN if only one day of that cruise was spent in a river or harbor. Those sailors are now presumed to be in the same status as the Marines, Army etc as having "BOOTH ON THE GROUND" and considered for a rating based on dieses already spelled out as resulting from AO exposure. This reclassification allows every sailor on board during that one day or more, to be considered exposed to Agent Orange and qualifies for a percentage rating, based on any illness he or his offspring have as a result of this exposure. The rating the VA assigns is based on diseases already known to be the result of AO exposure. Such Diabetes, heart disease etc as well as secondary complications from these disease. You will need to be evaluated by the VA, and then file your claim. The VA will give you a percentage rating based on your exposure and will financially compensate every sailor, per month, for life. It does not matter if you came down with diabetes 5 years ago. Rating and compensation also extends to the offspring's of these sailors if they have a disease geneticly passed to them because of their exposure to AO. There are several dieses listed. Heart Disease, Diabetes, etc as well as secondary diseases resulting from the primary diseases.
IMPORTANT. Any resulting compensation will be awarded from the DAY THAT YOU INITIATE YOUR CLAIM with the VA. FOLLOW THROUGH, on Senator Akaka (Hawaii) web site. See his press release as of Sept 2010 and all links as of that day. One link is for the ships already approved the second list is for those ships being considered for reclassification. At that time, I did not see the Cabildo, but more are being added. Stay on top of your claim with the service representative, who you will choose to use at your closest VA Clinic or Hospital. That person is your connection into the system. It takes a lot of forms and they fill them out for you. I am using the DVA. But there are others, Purple Heart Assoc, VFW and so on. They should all be located in the same area and they all report to the closest Regional VA office. You can, but I suggest that you try to avoid any contact with your Regional VA office. You can spend a lot of time messing around with the wrong person and may have to fill out all necessary paperwork yourself.......perhaps not using VA language and getting your claim rejected for more information. No you do not have to belong to that service group to receive service... Pick any one of them you want to use. He/she will be your claim manager. Sorry I did not take time to proof this email. But hope it will help the boys get something they were entitled to 40 years ago and now due under the new A laws, will be provided.

Merle A Metcalf, our Royal Baby of the 1962 passage into King Neptunes domain, went home to be with our Lord on January 19th 2011 after a long bout with his health. Merle was never able to make any of our reunions, but was always thrilled to get memorabelia from them. Some of his proudest possesions were his Cabildo cap, t-shirt, and placemat sized photos of the ship.

He was especially proud of the long sleeved shirt that Bob Gwin gave me for Merle... in Branson.

His wife, Dorothy lives in Palermo California (530) 534-15627 and expressed thanks to all of his shipmates and wives.
